Over the summer the Houston Arts Alliance invited me to submit three drawings for bicycle rack designs to be installed outside the Gus S. Wortham Theater in Houston. I submitted three different proposals and am proud to announce that one of my designs made the cut. The location for the racks will be on Preston Avenue at the north end of the Wortham Theater.

I have made temporary public art installations but this is my first permanent public piece. The public art world has a Catch-22 since experience with previous projects is usually required to gain experience in projects. I hope with this commission that I will be able to get my foot farther in the door of the public art world.

The racks will be made by a Houston based fabrication company after I make final drawings.

Tickets are required to attend the event and are on sale now. I will post a schedule of my events when the times are finalized.

From the Art Outside Website:

Art Outside is a community-based temporary art show created by hundreds of artists and appreciated by thousands of viewers/participants. AO provides a platform for all varieties of artists to display their work in an unconventional arena at the Austin Enchanted Forest. At its root, AO inspires new forms of creativity and experience by taking art out of the traditional gallery and into the forest.

ArtPrize is a new open art competition that will take place from September 23 to October 8, 2009. Rick DeVos, an Amway heir, came up with the idea to host an art competition in Grand Rapids, Michigan with $500,000 dollars of prize money to be given away through a public voting process. Artists are matched with venues at the ArtPrize homepage. Voting will be via text messages and online through the website. The top ten artists will then enter a final competition for the prize money. Artist profiles are displayed on the website.

I first heard about ArtPrize at an opening in San Antonio this spring. It sounded intriguing so I emailed Steve Samson of the Urban Institute for Contemporary Art (UICA) to see what it was all about. He said that I needed to submit my work online and then to secure a venue. I did both of those things. I will exhibit my work at the Old Federal Building in Grand Rapids.

It should be a fun time this fall in Michigan. For more information about ArtPrize or to join the competition yourself, please visit the homepage at http://www.artprize.org/
